This chapter discusses policies and regulations in North America. It focuses on regulatory requirements and best practices for nanosatellite developers. The chapter examines how agencies are addressing gaps, stress points on the regulatory framework, and some expectations about the directions that will be taken by regulators. It covers governing treaties and laws such as space treaties and international conventions, international telecommunications union/international organization, and domestic policy within the USA. Human activity in space has resulted in the accumulation of a large amount of debris in orbit. The general definition of space debris is any artificial, nonoperational object whether created unintentionally or intentionally. Related but distinct from space debris mitigation is the concept of space traffic management (STM). As per the US Space Policy Directive‐3, STM refers to the planning, coordination, and on‐orbit synchronization of activities to enhance the safety, stability, and sustain‐ability of operations in the space environment.
