For their strength and reliability, induction motors are the preferred solution for modern AC motor drives. In order to understand the operating principle of an induction machine, this chapter considers an AC motor in which the stator windings are fed by a three‐phase current at a frequency (f) that generates a rotating magnetic field in the air gap. The electrodynamic effect of the interaction between the rotating magnetic field and rotor currents generates a torque, which causes the rotor to start rotating. The chapter shows the structure of the induction machine and the arrangement of the magnetic axes of the stator and rotor with the relative reference angles. The chapter then shows the tractive effort diagram of a traction vehicle that illustrates the trend of the drive torque as a function of speed. Next, the chapter represents the most common control strategies for drives with voltage source inverters (VSIs) and three‐phase induction motors.
