Solidification is important in laser processing, since the behavior of the molten pool during solidification determines the fusion zone grain shape and size, microstructure, defects, and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the part. Under conventional solidification, this chapter starts with the simpler case of solidification without flow, where it first addresses solidification of a pure metal, followed by that of a binary alloy. As part of the discussion on binary alloy solidification, the chapter further discusses the conditions that lead to the formation of different types of microstructures, and also the mushy zone. It then provides some insight on the basic concepts of solidification with flow. The chapter also outlines the specific issues associated with rapid solidification. It starts the discussion by considering the simplest case, the classical Stefan problem. This involves a one‐dimensional analysis of the solidification of either a pure metal or binary melt of eutectic composition.
