The purpose of the engine is to combust a fuel, that is convert the chemical energy to thermal energy, and then transform it into mechanical work. This chapter looks into the processes such as air‐fuel mixture preparation, combustion processes in spark ignited (SI) and compression ignited (CI) engines, and formation of pollutants or emissions that come as unwanted byproducts from the cylinder. The engine‐out emissions or pollutants can be reduced in exhaust gas treatment systems, which are discussed in the chapter. Treating the gases in the engine exhaust system is achieved by using one or a mixture of catalysts, filters, and traps that store emissions. The chapter also discusses catalyst material and properties.
