Instrumentation systems are fundamental to acquiring meaningful data in flight testing. This chapter first provides an overview of the standard instrumentation available in a cockpit, which students can use in an educational flight testing context. Both traditional (“steam gauge”) and modern glass panel avionics systems are introduced, along with the theory behind the functioning of these instruments. Following this, instrumentation specific to flight testing is discussed, including an overview of global positioning system, accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, and barometers. This chapter concludes with a preview of which instruments are most suitable for each flight test.
