Dimensional analysis is an important tool in the search for functional relationships in experimental as well as theoretical models. This chapter provides a short summary, explaining the purpose and application of dimensional analysis. Experiments represent an obvious means to obtain more insight into the flow processes around a ship hull and the resultant resistance. Dimensional analysis helps to reduce the Buckingham number of relevant variables by combining them into dimensionless parameters. The theory is based on the Buckingham π‐theorem. The Buckingham π‐theorem postulates that the physically correct formula is equivalent to an equation involving a set of dimensionless parameters, so‐called π‐terms. The dimensionless parameters are constructed from the original variables. Dimensional analysis reveals that the calm water resistance of a ship depends on the type of fluid, ship speed, ship geometry, and the three dimensionless parameters: Reynolds number, Froude number, and Euler number.
