Both industry and national procurement organisations agree that the costs associated with the integration of a new weapon with an aircraft is expensive and the time taken to field new capability is too long. The cost drivers are many and for costs and timescales to be reduced, there is a need to address a multitude of factors. This chapter identifies the cost drivers and the initiatives required to improve business efficiencies such that weapons integration programmes can be streamlined, thereby reducing integration costs. The chapter also argues that even in a climate of reducing defence budgets, efficient weapons integration programmes can be a source of increased business for the aircraft design organisation.
