The eradication of poverty has been at the center of various public policies in Chile and has guided public policy efforts. The small area estimation (SAE) method implemented in Chile consists of an array of different methodologies and thus a variety of choices had to be made at different stages of the production process. The purpose of this chapter is to shed some light on these issues by describing and discussing the application of the SAE method implemented in Chile using the Casen 2009 data. It presents a description of the poverty measures and the data sources used in Chile, the data preparation process, SAE estimation method, and the results of the implementation of the SAE method and a discussion with directions for future research. This chapter will encourage researchers in other government statistical organizations to consider model‐based SAE techniques to improve the small area poverty statistics.
