This chapter gives some basic laminate definitions and a brief summary of the classical laminated‐plate theory (CLPT). Aspects of CLPT, in particular, the laminate stiffness matrices are used in the chapter. In this chapter, the term ‘composite material’ refers to a mixture of fibres and matrix resulting in a configuration that combines some of the best characteristics of the two constituents. Composite materials are, by their nature, anisotropic. In three dimensions, the engineering stresses and strains describing completely the state of deformation in a composite are denoted in matrix form. When dealing with thin composites, where the thickness of the laminate is much smaller than the other dimensions of the structure, the laminate is often assumed to be in a state of plane stress. This is usually the case of a composite plate that is thin compared with its in‐plane dimensions.
