This chapter introduces basic bus technique concepts. The focus is on the fault‐tolerance features of typical buses that are widely used in spacecraft, with practical applications as examples. It discusses bus communication fault, that is, fault in data interchange between bus interface unit (BIU) and bus, and fault in data transmission over the bus. SpaceWire is a simple and reliable bus technique for space applications. Based on IEEE1355 and low voltage differential signal (LVDS), it consists of multiple nodes and a bidirectional high‐speed digital serial connection router with a data rate of 400 Mb/s. IEEE 1394, a serial bus standard, originated from FireWire on the Apple Macintosh. Based on FireWire and established in 1995, IEEE 1394 has a maximum transmission speed of 400 Mb/s with a six‐core cable. The I2C bus is a serial bus and achieves full‐duplex synchronous data transmission with a serial data line (SDA) and a serial clock line (SCL).
