This chapter presents some closing thoughts, revisiting the research into the mechanics of legged locomotion and its accomplishments. It focuses on the implications of the form and motions of animals that move across a surface using their limbs. Given the importance of legged locomotion to the survival of terrestrial mammals, and the relatively high energetic investment needed to provide for locomotion, it seems reasonable to expect that numerous important, potentially even crucial, adaptations have taken place in every species (or lineage) where locomotion has an important impact on survival and/or reproductive potential. In terrestrial locomotion, the phenomenon of locomotion is dominated by the interaction of the mass of the organism with the mass of the substrate. Almost all interpretation of such work will depend on a solid conceptual understanding of the factors that primarily influence locomotion strategies.
