This chapter examines the demise of détente during the Ford administration. In moral terms, this accommodation with the Soviet Union begun by the Nixon administration was condemned as legitimizing a status quo untenable to various Cold War warriors. It was attacked as being strategically imprecise and too amenable to Moscow's ambitions. Crucial in mounting these attacks were the neoconservatives, who had cultivated powerful allies in Washington— notably Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson. The demise of détente ultimately came from within the ranks of Ford's own advisors, occasioned by ambitious figures such as Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, who would play roles in later administrations.
