This chapter discusses the broad variety of issues related to the study of electromagnetic compatibility in railway systems. It also discusses various types of interference phenomena in detail, namely conducted interference phenomena, capacitive interference phenomena, induced type interference phenomena and radiated interference phenomena. The chapter illustrates all the remedies available to the infrastructure manager to minimize stray currents acting on railway system elements. The effects of the stray currents should not be considered only in terms of influences and possible protections relating to corrosion. There are numerous examples in which stray currents from a DC traction system continue to generate considerable compatibility problems with the signaling system of another nearby railway system, in which case costly measures need to be taken to ensure safety. Finally, the chapter explains few measures that, although not directly concerning the railway system, allow the intensity of the stray current to be reduced.
