It is envisaged that open system architectures will provide the basis on which a ‘Plug and Play’ weapons integration capability will be realised. This chapter discusses how open architecture mission systems (such as that defined by the Allied Standard Avionics Architecture Council) coupled with modular weapon function software will have a significant bearing on the future of weapons integration. The chapter also considers the evolution of the contracting and industry environment and how this will enable the delivery of open systems technology that supports the introduction of a ‘Plug and Play’ weapons integration capability, thereby reducing integration costs and timescales.
