This chapter describes the most relevant features of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1609.4 standard, and discusses several concerns with its design. It presents simulation results to illustrate the impact of the IEEE 1609.4 time division scheme on control channel (CCH) load. The chapter also presents protocol enhancements, and provides a brief description of wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) Short Message Protocol (WSMP). One approach to multichannel operations is to use different radios to communicate over different channels. The IEEE 1609.4 standard, however, assumes a single radio operating over multiple dedicated short‐range communications (DSRC) channels. The WSMP is positioned between the data link and the application layers. This corresponds to the network and transport layers in an Internet Protocol (IP) network. WSMP offers an interface to DSRC safety applications.
