This chapter presents an example to explain the formulation of the basic fleet assignment model. For this purpose, it considers and illustrates a small hypothetical airline. This airline network schedule includes 16 flights that are either originating from or ending at the hub. The airline has two fleet types (e1 and e2). Then, the chapter shows a few time‐staggered diagrams that represent the schedule of the 16 flights when assigned to fleets e1 and e2, respectively. Each flight is represented by an arrow that connects between two stations. The chapter further tabulates the notations used to represent the assignment cost for the 16 flights and the two fleet types. The basic fleet assignment problem includes four main sets of constraints, which are the coverage constraints, the resources availability constraints, the through flights constraints, and the balance constraints. The chapter describes these in detail.
