Radiation limits are of primary concern to the public and the transportation maintenance workers that may be exposed to non‐ionizing radiation. Exposure to EMI fields determines if the safety standards to the public and occupational personnel are compromised. Areas where EMI fields are compromised require warnings and in some cases fences to prevent personnel from being injured by EMI sources. Rails can be best characterized as a transmission line. Protection against lightning strokes is not only the touch type application but it should also be applied where charge buildup can occur. Generally when repairs occur, the circuits are shut down and locked out using lockout tag out safety to prevent electrocution. However, personnel must always be vigilant not to make assumptions about the power having been shut off. This chapter also contains excerpts from the FCC regulations of occupational exposure and exposure to the public of various types of radiation.
