Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in different motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction below the level of injury. In all acute SCI the full extent of injury may not be apparent initially. SCI is most frequent in young adults and is oft en associated with vertebral fracture. The main causes of injuries in developed countries are road traffic and sporting accidents, whereas falling from a height is the most common cause in developing regions. The mechanisms of SCI can be broadly subclassified into five types‐dislocation, lateral bending, axial loading, rotation, and hyperflexion/hyperextension‐although severe injuries often result from a combination of more than one of these types. Incomplete injuries may be classified into four types: anterior spinal syndrome; central cord syndrome (CCS); Brown‐Séquard syndrome; and mixed types. Secondary medical complications for acute SCI such as respiratory failure, deep venous thrombosis, and urological complications should be appropriately corrected.
