This chapter considers the driver interface, also known as the human‐machine interface (HMI), which concerns the controls and displays with which the driver can interact, as well as the supporting operating logic. It emphasizes the resulting design documents and evaluation methods for driver interfaces to promote safety and ease of use. A major challenge in assessing the safety and usability of driver interface is dealing with the tradeoffs that drivers naturally make. The impression is that when preoccupied with an in‐vehicle task, drivers lose awareness of the driving context—that is, situation awareness. Motor vehicle design documents fall into five general classes namely: principles, information reports, guidelines, recommended practices, and standards. A product liability action against a product is extraordinarily difficult to defend if the product design and evaluation deviate from recommended practice.
