Introducing a new technology into an existing infrastructure presents many challenges to the developers, regulators, users, and the general population. Although commonly used to describe architectural design concepts, the fundamental idea works very well in other engineering or technology fields, and is useful to keep in mind when discussing the design and implementation of UAS airspace integration architectures such as U‐space, UTM, and AAM/UAM. This chapter proposes a simple framework (or more modestly a set of questions) for a methodology for assessing the risk inherent in the integration of remotely powered aircraft into national airspace systems. One of the major factors in designing or adapting an integrated airspace architecture is the human/machine interface problem.
