In this chapter, the authors explore the history and development of aviation communication systems, tracing their evolution from the earliest days of aviation to the present day. Several actors and organizations are involved in communication systems that are dedicated to data link, service design, standardization, deployment, and maintenance. These actors and organizations can be classified into four main categories as follows: aviation authorities, Air Transport Industry, Aviation data link service providers (DSPs) and aviation stakeholder. Spectrum allocation for aeronautical services is regulated by national and international organizations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. Existing National Airspace System (NAS) air‐to‐air communications are specifically limited to three main communication systems, traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS), very high frequency (VHF) Communications on the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF), and automatic dependent surveillance‐broadcast (ADS‐B).
