The two types of track circuits most commonly used are the type at interlockings where crossovers in track usage occur and audio frequency (AF) for mainline running rails before interlockings. These are commonly used for automatic train control (ATC). This chapter serves as an introduction and gives the reader some knowledge of subway system signaling and other communications using the rails as transmission lines. Included in this discussion are the necessary differential equations for solving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues should they arise from track circuits, substations, DC power supplies or AC propulsion units. Most of the analysis presented in this chapter is due to the inductance and conductivity of the track circuit loops. The use of mutual inductance from the loop and the use of circuit theory are beneficial to illustrate the difference between magnetic field coupling through field theory and using circuit theory.
