One of the most cost-effective measures of improving traffic flow in urbanized areas is retiming traffic signals. However, traffic signal timings are generally not reviewed and updated as often as they should be. As a result, timing patterns do not reflect current traffic and pedestrian needs. This flaw causes a major increase in traffic delay at signalized intersections. A fundamental step in updating signal timings is the estimation of the benefit of retiming, for which signal timings optimization and analysis tools are often used. The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative method for estimating the benefit of retiming signals that would not rely on analytical tools. Different linear and nonlinear regression models were developed. The dependent variable was the benefit, that is, reduction in delay after optimizing signal timings. Fourteen independent variables were derived from the common parameters that affected signal timing performance, such as volumes, capacity, geometry, and current signal timings. Three real actuated, coordinated networks were used. Regression models can be used to estimate the benefit of retiming signals.
