The 6Mo based sea water utility system on the Draugen platform formed leaks just after start up to the high temperature at the sea water outlets from the process coolers. Several solutions were assessed and a concept from Sintef named 'RCP - Resistor-controlled Cathodic Protection' was selected, and developed into a product that was successfully installed in a joint co-operation with CorrOcean A/S. The innovative RCP concept cost approximately 10 % of the other solutions evaluated such as material changeout. The RCP concept function was based on results from the first months in operation and it is being evaluated by other operators to solve similar problems as those on the Draugen field. It can furthermore provide an attractive solution when combined with cheaper, less corrosion resistant alloys (e.g. 316L), giving better life cycle costs than the more costly steels commonly used today.
