This report presents a comprehensive study of automotive materials, manufacturing processes, and vehicle design concepts and methods. Sources provided discuss the development and production of body panels and doors, suspensions and chassis, engines and transmissions, steering and braking components, and parts for bumpers, wheel assemblies, instrument panels and car interiors, among others. The properties required of materials for these components are reported along the design of new, lighter weight alloys, composites and engineered materials with improved resistance to wear, corrosion, high stresses and extremes of temperature. Other references cited review the criteria for selection and application of these materials in current and future-generation automobiles, focusing on weight reduction, corrosion resistance, damage tolerance, noise and vibration and recyclability.
