The resistance of duplex stainless steel to three important corrosion types is reviewed. These are: chloride stress corrosion cracking (CSCC), sulphide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC) and hydrogen embrittlement. The results of tests to compare the resistance to CSCC of various duplex grades with common austenitic alloys are presented. The effect of virtually saturated salt crusts on the initiation of cracking is discussed and the implications for service life are assessed. Duplex and super duplex grades are very resistant to CSCC and can be used up to high temperatures in chloride containing environments. Duplex stainless steels have good resistance to SSCC, particularly at pH's in excess of 4. Whilst hydrogen can enter duplex steels under cathodic protection subsea, the risk of failure is extremely low because of the very high stresses (close to UTS) required to cause crack propagation.
