Low-alloy weathering steels have been known for about 60 years but the limitations of their use and the possibility of increasing their resistance to atmospheric corrosion by optimisation of alloy content have not been fully explored. More than 130 compositional variations of low-alloyed steels have been tested in the last 20 years in our institute. Statistical models connecting resistance to atmospheric corrosion with alloy content have been used as well as examination of steels for use in thin and thick walls of railway transport units. Measurements of car construction corrosion rates of such units made of weathering and simple low carbon steels after 10-20 years of service use are reported.
