Safety regulations have caused increased structural requirements for several automotive systems, including doors and bumpers. Meeting these requirements with conventional sheet steel products results in a weight penalty that auto makers are increasingly reluctant to accept. The use of formable high strength steels can result in significant weight reduction in these applications. However, for higher strength heat treated steels, the lack of formability is a barrier to applying these products to conventional sheet components. Recently, manufacturers of automotive door beams and bumper systems have been developing processes to form hot rolled or cold rolled and annealed heat treatable carbon steels into their final shape and subsequently heat treat the material to high strength levels. National Steel has been supporting these efforts by evaluating the heat treating response of higher carbon sheet steel products, and supplying appropriate materials to costumers for prototype development. This paper will describe the results of our evaluations, the properties of the materials as used in the final applications and future potential.
