The results of these studies show the feasibility of using an acoustic emission monitoring system to detect and record emissions from a growing crack, on an aircraft in-flight. Very few emissions occur during flight when a crack is not growing. Waveform recordings, along with a measure of the load environment provide sufficient information to permit the detected AE events to be separated from events such as electrical noise. Temporal domain relationships between successive signals can provide greater weight to signals which appear to be damage-related. Low amplitude and saturated signals, which do not signal process well, can aid in validation of cracking events by considering where they lie in time, relative to suspected crack signals. The presence of a crack can be indicated by crack growth or crack surface rubbing. Systematic changes in relative arrival times at multiple sensors can be used to detect crack front movement.
