Subjected to the research was the problem of stability of the fibers of boron (B) and boron with barrier coats of boron carbide (B/B4C) in the melts of aluminium or its binary alloys with inactive (5.0 % by weight of Cu), carbide-forming (10.5 % by weight of Si) and surface-active (6.0 % by weight of Mg and 4.0 % by weigth of Sb) dopes. The kinetics of the interaction between the fibers and melts was analyzed by the method of selective etching combined with the methods of gravimetric and radiographic analyses. The strength loss by the boron fibers in contact with the aluminium melt during stage 2 of the interaction (60 per cent for 1200 s) is caused by the formation of aluminium borides. The strength loss by the B/B4C fibers in the same conditions is not in excess of 20 per cent. When in contact with Al-Mg and Al-Sb melts the boride formation rate becomes lower because of the stibium and magnesium segregation at the phase boundary.
