This book addresses the increasingly important problem of full-scale fatigue testing of components and structures. Validation of design assumptions in fatigue is particularly important where complex shapes or joints occur, especially in the current situation where safety and environment considerations are frequently involved. The book looks at recent developments in this area over a very wide range of industries and is particularly valuable for this reason and for the quality of the contributions. A general historical view of full-scale testing and several specific reviews associated with the transportation industries (aircraft, automobile, rail and helicopter industries) are given. A series of chapters are devoted to highly stressed welded structures such as artillery guns, offshore production platforms (UKOS-RP I and II) and bridges built for civil use. Description of the production of a standardized load history for offshore platform (Wave Action Standardized History, WASH). This sequence is a series of sea states of varying intensity and frequency content. The chapter on fatigue of bridges includes both steel and prestressed concrete beams, as well as structural connections (producing high-strength bridges). In nuclear and aeroengine industries is safety ensured by understanding fatigue crack initiation and growth. Chapters on cranes, wire ropes, test facilities and service load data acquisition complete a well written and extremely useful survey of problems and solutions in full-scale testing of structures and components. It should be of great help to all designers concerned with safety and reliability of mechanical components and structures.
