Most diesel fuel filters, lube oil filters, and hydraulic filters encounter unsteady conditions during their service life. Therefore, test standards should include vibration as well as cyclic flow parameters. The paper discusses the effects of cyclic flow and vibration on liquid filter performance. The major areas covered are the test system modifications with regard to ISO 4572 and J 1985 and significant results. The conditions were designed to be generally applicable to diesel fuel, lube oil, and hydraulic filtration. Test variables were adjusted systematically to isolate the effect of each variable including: fluid, flow rate, cycle frequency, cycle amplitude, vibration frequency, and vibration amplitude. Test fluids included hydraulic oil and Viscor test fuel. Results show that the particle penetration can be increased by as much as one order of magnitude by cyclic flow, vibration, or both.
