Graphitic corrosion is a form of de-alloying or selective leaching that occurs in cast iron material. Caused by the graphitic matrix present, this corrosion is unique to gray cast irons and often occurs in buried gray cast iron pipes, also exposure to an aqueous environment is all that is necessary for the de-alloying. Protection of the piping can be provided by internal linings, protective coatings and cathodic protection.
