The tunnel design issues for the Radlicka-Strahov tunnel project (RAST) in Prague are evaluated. The critical traffic situation in the busy Smichov area of central Prague made the construction of the tunnels under Mrazovka hill as one of the most important transport structures. Likewise, the tunnel's civil engineering problems, which result from the situation and geological conditions of this structure, also represent both a challenge and an opportunity in tunnelling technology. The local geological, environmental and traffic conditions that governed the design of the tunnel works are described.
