The current trend for the offshore industry to operate in greater water depths has led to increasing challenges for deepwater mooring systems. The high costs of establishing a drilling unit on a deepwater drilling location necessitates cost-effective mooring solutions. The basic requirement for deepwater mooring systems is minimum weight. Mooring systems must be also designed to minimize storage requirements for system components. Deployment and recovery of the mooring system must be achievable under minimum load and ideally, with the flexibility to use a wide range of vessel types. This broadens the scope of deployment options and minimizes deployment/recovery costs.
