The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requested information on its intent to reduce the permissible occupational limit (PEL) of chromic acid and chromate emissions. American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists reduced their Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for manganese and is also planning to reduce the TLV for nickel. By combining resources from the Navy's welding engineering, pollution prevention and occupational safety and health programs, industrial hygienists and engineers are (1) characterizing personnel exposures and area fugitive emissions, (2) changing the welding processes, and (3) substituting, where possible, the welding filler material during a variety of welding processes at shipbuilding operations.
