Monitoring of PM10 alongside roadways in Edmonton, Alberta was undertaken in an effort to get data on exposure concentrations that may exist for commuters during peak (rush hour) traffic flow periods. Five roadways with average daily traffic flows ranging from 4,600 to 27,000 vehicles per day were monitored. PM10 concentrations were found to be higher along roadways having greater traffic volumes. Results suggested that lanes handling the bulk of vehicle traffic flow would experience higher PM10 concentrations during rush hour compared to the other lanes handling less of the traffic. These findings may be important for vehicle commuters or cyclists traveling with the bulk of traffic flow during morning and afternoon rush hour periods.
