In the summer of 1997, nonmethylene hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations on roadways were measured for three weeks in South California Air Basin (SoCAB). A clean air vehicle which met the Ultra-Low-Emission-Vehicle (ULEV) standards was used, and samplers were located on the vehicle, at the intake duct and at the tail pipe. NMHC concentrations measured on roadways exhibit a maximum 2.44 ppm. Measurements of roadway NMHC concentrations using a clean air vehicle in SoCAB showed that the concentration of hydrocarbon emitted from the vehicle is less than the ambient concentration taken into the vehicle over a wide range of areas especially in the areas where higher ambient concentration is observed.
