Batch laboratory separations studies were undertaken to determine the effect of water cut, system pressure, upstream choke pressure drop, and free gas flow on the rate of separation of mixtures of crude oil and production brine. Increased water cut and increased system pressure result in accelerated oil-water separation. The effect of choke pressure drop is dependent on phase continuity of the oil-water mixture. High choke differential pressure accelerates separation in water-continuous mixtures and decelerates separation in oil-continuous mixtures. The addition of methane gas upstream of the choke hinders the rate of separation of oil from water.
