This paper studies the water hammer speed in Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) composite pipelines using decoupled analysis. By combining the general equations for fluid transient and fundamental mechanics equations for composite pipe, the wave speed of the fluid is derived. Three types of support conditions were considered: 1) the pipeline anchored only at upstream position, 2) the pipeline anchored against longitudinal movement, and 3) pipeline with expansion joints throughout its length. The proposed formula can be used for general composite materials and for both thin-wall and thick-wall pipe. The effect of the anistropy of pipe material on fluid wave speed is discussed. A comparison between the proposed expression and the existing expressions for water hammer speed is also provided.
