Problematic formations in areas such as the Gulf of Mexico present significant challenges to deepwater drilling and well integrity. Hole-stabilization-while-drilling (HSWD) technology can help meet these challenges. Other names for this process include formation consolidation, pressure profile control, and reservoir conformance technology. This paper discusses conventional HSWD techniques and introduces new HSWD tools, chemical systems, properties, applications, and placement techniques. New downhole tools can be used to inject formation-erosion repair, as well as sealing and consolidation treatments. Logging-while-drilling (LWD) sonic tools that measure pore pressures at the bit and correlate seismic data for below-the-bit predictions of stratigraphy, lithology, and types of structures can help facilitate HSWD applications. These LWD tools will help drillers identify when, where, and how to apply HSWD technology. This paper includes examples of HSWD applications in land and offshore wells. Laboratory tests and field trials for initial applications in deepwater wells have produced favorable results. These results suggest that new HSWD technology can help enhance drilling, reduce the risks to well control and well integrity, and reduce the costs associated with deepwater well construction and production.
