Alloys for critical turbine engine, airframe, rocket, and space applications vary widely in forging characteristics. For each material, issues such as surface protection, process window, flow stress, and metallurgical response to deformation need to be assessed in conjunction with the forging method. The forging characteristics of aerospace materials, including nickel-based superalloys, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys are discussed. Major forging processes such as hammer, hydraulic press, isothermal, and mechanical press forging are discussed, along with ring rolling and roll forming.
