Modern communication theory and digital signal processors are enabling the implementation of energy-efficient, affordable acoustic modems for undersea wireless telemetry. The Telesonar research at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego (SSC-SD) is addressing a broad range of relevant topics such as modeling sound propagation in shallow environments, developing link protocols, and designing multimode telesonar modems that adapt communication prevailing environmental conditions. These efforts require extensive testing in actual ocean environments and motivated the development of the telesonar testbed. The telesonar testbed is an autonomous, high-fidelity, reconfigurable and modular instrument intended to serve multiple objectives.
