The purpose of this research is to develop a hydro/air energy converter for ultra low-head hydropower and promote co-existence between hydropower generation system and many living things in the river. In our research, a hydro/air energy converter gate system for power generation is studied. This gate system is designed for one way stream river. By this gate system, water energy is changed into reciprocal air flow in a hermetic container, and the air flow drives the air turbine to generate electric power as same as ocean wave power generation system. The gate system has been tested with fish at National Institute for Aquaculture. The results of experiment demonstrate that this new gate system is easier for fish passing through than normal single gate. The relationships among the cycle time of the water head in the tank, air velocity and chamber pressure for two kinds of gate system are investigated.
