The Navy Combat Edge (NCE) System is an aviation life support system designed to provide increased g-tolerance in high performance aircraft. The design incorporates g-modulated positive pressure breathing, an upper torso counter pressure garment, and an extended coverage g-suit. In September of 1997, the NCE lower anti-g garment, EAGLE (CSU-20/P) suffered a failure during a combat training mission, causing the pilot to temporarily lose control of his F/A-18 aircraft, and to consequently abort the flight. Fortunately, both aircraft and pilot landed safely. The incident resulted in grounding of the NCE system until appropriate remedial actions were identified. The NCE team undertook an engineering investigation of the g-suit's failure. The results of the investigation revealed deficiencies of the bladder design, the restraint fabric, and the performance standards by which the g-suit had been originally qualified. This paper presents the test methods pursued and developed throughout the investigation, and recommendation for a new qualification standard for the performance of g-suits.
