The correct gasket selection is normally a relative simple task for typical services. However when the service duty consists of severe temperature fluctuation, such as in hot oil exchangers and piping and to a lesser extent in steam exchangers, the bolting can relax. This relaxation of the bolts is mainly due to the reduction in thickness of the gasket. The bolting should not be tightened excessively or the gasket can be crushed. To improve the performance of the gasket more expensive bolting procedures may have to be applied to obtain acceptable performance. The objective of this paper is to review a relative new gasket design, which consist of a profiled grooved ring, with graphite (or PTFE, silver, etc.) pressed in, and to show when and why this gasket will perform better than other gaskets. A list of applications is included. In the past 10 years over 5000 girth flanges and 7000 piping flanges have been equipped with these type of gaskets and this paper discusses several common applications in the petrochemical industry. The reuse of these gaskets as well as other areas of caution are proposed in the paper. Also proposed is a Purchase Specification Sheet, which can be used as a Purchasing Guideline, and a proposal for the OD and ID dimension of the sealing element of Camprofile gaskets for ASME/ANSI B16.5 type Ia, IIb and IIIb piping flanges.
