As a part of the continuing effort in Ciba of developing new flame-resistant high performance thermosetting materials for aircraft interiors, RD97-169, a phosphorus-containing cyanate ester resin, was synthesized. This resin is a light yellow viscous liquid or semisolid and soluble in common organic solvents. It could be thermally cured at the similar temperature range used for processing traditional phenolic systems without the drawback of forming volatile materials. This would potentially reduce the time and the labor cost associated with fabrication. The cured material was evaluated for its mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. It has exhibited high char yield and UL V-0 flammability. Additional flammability tests such as LOI and the microscale combustion calorimeter tests have been conducted and have shown some promise.
