Over the past few years, a wide variety of digital X-ray imaging technologies have been developed which offer image quality capabilities suitable for many industrial applications. At the same time, there has been increased pressure to reduce the use of X-ray film and processing chemicals. The environmental hazards associated with the use and disposal of these chemicals and products, in addition to the cost of these disposable products is placing strong pressures on the reduction of X-ray film usage. The United States Air Force is a major user of X-ray film and chemistry in support of their various aircraft systems. Under a Small Business Innovation Research Program with the Air Force, Industrial Quality, Inc. has been investigating the potential for the implementation of a variety of these digital, non-film X-ray imaging technologies. Initial experimental evaluations included storage phosphors, scintillator-camera systems, flat panel imagers and the reverse geometry method. Both quantitative image measurement test tools and actual or simulated aircraft structure were used to evaluate the various systems. More extensive system evaluations are planned as the program continues into an SBIR Phase II project.
