Pigmented mineral-filled polypropylene (PP) composites are marketed as potential alternatives to engineering plastics for automotive components. PP composites are more susceptible to surface scratch & mar, thus limiting its acceptance for interior applications. This study investigates the scratch and mar mechanisms of PP composites with different mineral fillers and the effects of their aspect ratio and particle size on scratch and mar resistance. A correlation was found between scratch visibility and scratch hardness measured with an interferometer. Harder filler provided higher scratch & mar resistance. Talc-filled PP composites had poor scratch & mar resistance with or without the addition of an interface modifier.
