A preliminary study has been conducted to determine the effect of airbag fire time occupant position at that instant. A method for constructing the probabilistic models, which calculates the probability of an occupant at a given position has been developed. The models are a function of the initial seating position, crash severity, and air bag nature, as well as occupant motion. The accuracy of the results is significantly dependent on the data used to construct the models. The two sets of data used in this study to construct the two different models were rigid barrier and offset deformable barrier. Although these two models gave significantly different results in terms of absolute numbers, the trends observed were the same: air bag fire time is probabilistic with inherent uncertainty.
